PT Badak NGL (Badak LNG) has once again received recognition for its innovations. Two patents developed by Badak LNG employees won awards in the Best Green and Blue Innovation Patent category at the 2026 Indonesia Patent Awards, organized by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Ministry of Law of the Republic of Indonesia.

These two innovations won second and third place, respectively. Second place was awarded for an innovation titled “Lean Amine Temperature Control Method for Optimizing Steam Consumption in the Amine Regenerator Unit (1C-5) Reboiler via an Auto-Cascade System.” Meanwhile, Third Place was awarded for the innovation “Method for Preventing Hydrocarbon Leaks During Operation of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Booster Cooler at a Liquefied Natural Gas Plant.”

Both innovations are the result of cross-functional collaboration among Badak LNG officers in developing solutions to real challenges and needs within the operational environment. This achievement demonstrates how on-site experience can serve as a source of innovation that benefits operational efficiency, safety, reliability, and sustainability.

The innovation that won second place was developed to optimize the control of lean amine temperature in the amine regenerator unit through the implementation of an auto-cascade system. The implementation of this innovation has had a positive impact on the efficiency of steam and fuel gas usage in the LNG plant’s operational processes.

Based on cumulative data from January 2023 through October 2024 for two trains—Train G and Train H—this innovation resulted in savings of 159,950 metric tons of steam and 592 MMSCF of fuel gas. From an economic perspective, the resulting efficiency savings amounted to US$6.04 million. This achievement was realized with an investment of approximately US$2,000 and had a payback period of less than one month.

Bambang Irawan, Lead Engineer of Production Planning & Energy and a representative of the inventors, stated that this achievement was the result of cross-functional collaboration.

“This award belongs to everyone at Badak LNG, as this innovation was born from the collaboration between operators, engineers, and the maintenance team.”

Meanwhile, the innovation that won third place focused on a method to prevent hydrocarbon leaks during the operation of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Booster Cooler at the LNG plant.

Implementing this innovation has the potential to prevent LNG production losses valued at US$17.6 million per year, while also preventing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 134,443 metric tons of CO₂e per year from flaring activities.

In addition, this method also has the potential to prevent the waste of approximately 1,947 MMSCF of fuel gas per year. One of its key advantages is that this innovation can be implemented without requiring investment in new equipment.

After a series of competitions beginning in August 2026, both innovations were introduced at the 2026 Indonesian Patent Business Forum on November 3–5, 2026, at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC).

The forum is part of an effort to accelerate the commercialization of national inventions while bringing inventors together with industry representatives, investors, and strategic stakeholders.

At the forum, Badak LNG participated with a booth showcasing the two innovations that won the 2026 Indonesia Patent Awards. On the same occasion, Badak LNG’s Corporate Secretary, Henny Trisnadewi, visited the booth and witnessed firsthand the presentation of both innovations.

“Congratulations and alhamdulillah for Badak LNG’s achievement. This is the first time such an event has been organized by the Ministry of Law of the Republic of Indonesia. Badak LNG is grateful for the opportunity to register its patents and successfully win awards for both submitted patents. “May this achievement serve as motivation for all Badak LNG employees to continue generating innovations and making improvements, thereby contributing positively to both the company and the nation,” said Henny.

Badak LNG’s participation in the forum served as a platform to share experiences and introduce innovations born from operational challenges at the LNG plant to a broader audience of stakeholders and industry players.

Going beyond simply winning awards, Badak LNG is also opening opportunities to provide guidance to other LNG industries that wish to replicate these innovations, by adapting their implementation to the specific conditions, systems, and needs of each facility.

By strengthening a culture of innovation and leveraging intellectual property, Badak LNG continues to drive the development of solutions that support more efficient, safe, reliable, and environmentally responsible operations. These efforts also open opportunities for the knowledge and benefits derived from these innovations to be shared and replicated, thereby supporting the advancement of the LNG industry in Indonesia.
