Bontang, June 24, 2026 – Badak LNG conducted a Major Emergency Exercise as part of its efforts to ensure personnel readiness, the reliability of emergency response systems, and the effectiveness of cross-functional coordination in addressing potential emergencies within its operational area.
The exercise, which involved employees, the Emergency Response Team (ERT), and management, was conducted in accordance with the Company’s applicable Emergency Response & Crisis Management procedures. The activity also involved coordination with external agencies, namely the Harbor Master’s Office and Port Authority (KSOP), the Water and Air Police (Polairud), and the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), to test the effectiveness of integrated communication and emergency response.
In the drill scenario, at approximately 08:30 WITA, a tugboat conducting a sea trial following repairs experienced a malfunction in its speed control system, making it difficult to maneuver and causing it to run aground after striking a reef in the vicinity of the operational waters. The incident resulted in damage to the vessel’s fuel tanks and caused a diesel spill into the surrounding waters.
Upon receiving the incident report, the relevant team immediately conducted an initial assessment, suspended non-urgent maritime activities near the site, and deployed the Oil Spill Combat Team (OSCT) to carry out spill containment operations using pre-positioned response equipment. Based on field observations, the fuel spill was found to be spreading with the ocean currents and had the potential to affect the operational facility area; consequently, the scenario was escalated to an environmental emergency.
As the exercise scenario unfolded, a simulated incident was included in which a member of the oil spill response team was depicted as falling into the sea and sustaining an injury to his left ankle. In response to this situation, procedures for rescuing a victim at sea were immediately activated. The rescue team successfully evacuated the victim safely, provided initial on-site treatment, and handed the victim over to the medical team for further care.
Meanwhile, the oil spill containment operation continued until the entire spill was successfully localized and recovered without any significant escalation affecting the facility or other critical infrastructure. The recovered material was then handled in accordance with applicable environmental management procedures.
At 09:57 WITA, the situation was declared safe and an “all clear” status was announced. This activity was part of a series of Major Emergency Exercises planned by Badak LNG for 2026.
Feri Sulistyo Nugroho, Director & Chief Operating Officer of Badak LNG, explained that the purpose of this exercise was to train the capabilities and readiness of all employees and management in responding to and managing emergencies within the Badak LNG facility. The hope is that, should a real emergency occur, it can be addressed effectively, accurately, and swiftly.
“As a company that operates LNG facilities with high safety standards, we must ensure that every employee understands their role and responsibilities in an emergency situation. Through this drill, we not only test our procedures and equipment but also assess the effectiveness of coordination, communication, and decision-making at all levels of the organization. “We appreciate all parties who participated, ensuring the exercise was carried out successfully, safely, and in accordance with the planned scenario,” he said.
As one of the National Critical Infrastructure sites producing LNG, the Badak LNG Plant must operate safely and smoothly. Through the implementation of this Major Emergency Exercise simulation, it is hoped that all parties involved will understand their respective roles and responsibilities in maintaining the safety and operational security of the Badak LNG Plant.
